Illetas Cove, Majorca. When three of my friends looked at this painting they each said, 'it looks like Tracy Island'. I hadn't thought of it, I just painted the cove, but I liked the beach because it looked like a resort from 1960, the bar and lounge building are early 1960s Modernist, my favourite architecture and Tracy Island is my dream Modernist house.
Sadly Puro Beach took over, replacing the dark magical bar interior with huge equipment, traditional Mallorca straw umbrellas replaced with sterile white squares, Scandi men wearing top knots and white trousers as wide as sails strut about delivering food on oversized trays to people on white beds.
This public beach is close to Bonsol Hotel which was built by Antonio Xamena in 1953. From then until 1964 he developed his land down to the beach into garden villas, gardens lush with trees, pathways leading to features, staircases, exotic flowers and pools cascading down a steep hillside. He worked towards an ecological balance as he was of the opinion that every Hotel and house on the island should assimilate its own waste, the whole system achieved remarkable levels of energy efficiency and avoided any pollution of the sea. In 2001 the Bonsol received the Government Environmental Award "EMAS" for its contribution towards ecological achievement.
