Photographic print. Staircases at the arcade burial wall of niches in Alassio Cemetery on the Italian Riviera, Italy.
The staircases in the stone arcade lined with pillars looked a little bizarre but rather elegant and beautiful. In the wall of le nicchie they are a necessity for people to reach the higher niches as they visit their deceased and decorate them with flowers and candles. This stone arcade is on a long avenue of trees leading to an English Cemetery and an area of grand tombs in the Cimitero. There was once an English community of over 1000 but today the permanent British community is about 15 plus about 15 resident for part of the year.
Colours are as accurate as possible but may differ slightly due to screen calibrations.
