Photographic Print. Tunnel of Love entrance to River Caves of The World dark fantasy fairground ride. Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
One of the first attractions at Blackpool Pleasure Beach was a charming water ride which opened in 1905 as The River Caves of the World. It is endearing that it is now 115 years old yet is still a timeless magical subterranean experience. The boat passes through multiple scenes of the wonders such as the Blue Grotto of Capri with stalactites and stalagmites, ancient Egyptian civilisation and Cambodian Temples. The scenes are not hi tech big budget but because of this fairground ride designers used their imagination and it is more wondrous and atmospheric. As a child going on the River Caves at Southport Pleasureland, I was transported to a journey of coloured lights, beauty, strangeness and other worldliness which made a lasting impression on me.
The tunnel of love is a sign used in a Coronation Street scene when Vera had a fancy man in Blackpool and has remained since then.
