Colours are accurate to my photographs but are often over saturated on current HD, uncalibrated and phone screens. I was intrigued by the beautiful orange coloured Carp fish in the Water Lily pond at Tides in Holetown, Barbados in the Caribbean. They were camera shy so I spent a long time watching them and waiting for them to come to the surface so I could photograph them. I like the way the statue of the God Neptune fiercely oversees his pool of water and looks out to sea which is just beyond the Lily pond. Neptune was the name that ancient Romans gave to the Greek mythological god of the sea and earthquakes, Poseidon. Neptune was usually depicted as a bearded man holding a trident and seated in a seashell drawn by sea-horses. The way the water and colours of the fish blur like watercolours is something I want to explore further in my photography. Koi are ornamental varieties of domesticated Carp that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor water gardens and ponds. In Japanese Koi represents love or affection so they are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan and Nishikigoi means coloured Carp. It derives from the Japanese word Nishiki meaning a highly coloured cloth and Goi or Koi which is the word for Carp. Koi are believed to have been introduced to Japan with the invading Chinese and according to Koi fish history the first account of them being kept by an emperor in Japan was in AD 200. Colour mutations feauring patches of colour occurred naturally in China and breeding began for these mutations around 1000 years ago. They were first bred for mutations in Japan around 1820 and it is generally recognised that the Japanese are the creators of Nishikigoi, a name first used in 1914. They are also called Living Jewels. The Koi, Water Lily flowers and pond leaves form decorative patterns in the water garden. Although the fish are swimming, the photographs have a tranquility and stillness due to their grace and the hazy water and reflections in the Koi pond. In the section Flowers there is a pink cone shaped Ginger Torch flower which was photographed at The Flower Forrest Botanical Gardens in Barbados.907
