Photographic Print. Blooming lilac Hyacinth with backdrop of dark Cacti in Midnight Garden painting.
The centre petals and stamens of the main flowering Cactus in Midnight Garden are featured in misty light in this photograph. The square shape of the flower seems to fit with the more square proportion of the space it leans diagonally across. Hyacinths are native to Eastern Mediterranean and were first botanically listed by the Greek
philosopher-naturalist, Theophrastus 372-287 BC and mentioned by the Greek poet, Homer, in the Iliad around the 10th and 8th centuries BC as being
among the flowers which formed the couch of Hera, queen of heaven and
earth. Both Homer and Virgil noted its sweet fragrance.
