Portmeirion is a village and area of woodlands on an estuary which is
set into the hills and mountains of Snowdonia, Wales. It was designed
and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis who from 1925 - 1976 created a mix of buildings,
architectural features, fountains, curiosities and statues which he
collected from around the world. Clough admired the works of the sculptor William Brodie and aquired the Hercules sculpture in 1960 after seeing him in a picture in Country Life and drove him on the back of a pick up all the way from Aberdeen to Portmeirion. Hercules had been cast in about 1863 and was listed Grade ll in 1971.
