In 1931 while on a visit to Philadelphia, the Pleasure Beach's new director Leonard Thompson saw parks themed in the Modernist Style and wanted the style for Blackpool. In 1933 he brought in Joseph Emberton to design the whole of the Pleasure Beach and in 1939 The Casino was opened. Emberton was the 1st British born architect to design in the Modern Movement Style and the only one included in the ground breaking New York Exhibition, The International Style in 1932. Emberton designed for the Pleasure Beach upto his death in 1956 then Jack Ratcliffe who had been involved in The Festival Of Britain, was brought in and continued until 1976.
Fairgrounds were once rich in fairground art, hand painted, often in a naive way, resulting in an original creation of quirky fairground fantasy. Many fair rides are being closed down or replaced by ones with screwed on plastic sheets of computerised graphics. However there are some exceptions in the new rides, using originality such as Superbowl at Southport and Bling with it's hand airbrushed surreal eye at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, though it was sold in 2011.
I want to travel further to photograph as many old rides as I can, creating more fairground art images before they disappear, to show their enchanting sense of magic, fantasy and escapism. Some old rides from Pleasureland, Southport have been taken and restored at Dreamland Historical Amusement Park in Margate, including the 1920's Caterpillar, machinery from The Ghost Train and River Caves, the Hall of Mirrors and Haunted Swing.
